Ferret as Pet at Home

Among the well-liked house pets in the United States, after dog and cat, ferrets are the third most popular choice. They belong to the weasel family. Ferrets are very approachable and friendly that is why they are very easy to train. To have a ferret as pet at home has beneficial effects to the entire family. They cause joy, fun and laughter too. It is not surprising that they have become popular.

Ferret Life Span

When well taken care for and remain healthy, a ferret’s life span can be from 8 to 10 years. A mature male ferret weighs about two pounds. Female ferrets are lighter as they are only about a pound in weight. Ferrets thrive better in cold climates. Baby ferrets are called kits.

Should you decide to own a ferret as pet, you will need to provide its basic needs, give it time and attention. This way, your ferret will flourish and be able to give you joy. You will need to know what food you can and cannot give to your pet. This will ensure your pet does not suffer from illnesses. Foods such as nuts and sweets or dairy products are not part of your ferret diet. You may give boiled, mashed vegetables and fruits. After a kit reaches its 6th week, it is time to wean it.

Being extremely playful animals, ferrets require your time and attention. Of course, extra care too especially if there are children in the house who might handle a ferret the wrong way which may harm your pet. Ferrets are nibblers and if they happen to bite a child’s finger, the child might accidentally drop the tiny pet.

Nibblers that they are, part of your responsibility as owner is to train your pet to avoid doing this. They will nibble at just about anything including your furniture if the behavior is not stopped.

As mentioned, ferrets require time and attention and if this cannot be granted, likely you cannot own a ferret as pet. If your daily routine necessitate that you are out most of the time, you might want to reconsider your options. Also, if you are one for peace and quiet and a tranquil atmosphere as opposed to ferrets’ love for activities and fun, you really have to give it a thought.
